Vintage FO (not mine)

I thought I would share with you one of prized possessions. My mother made each of her three sons an afghan. I received mine when I was 12 or 13. I had a huge growth spurt just before and she just used up all the stash she had and we still had to go get more. The flip flop is there just to add some scale. Oh I wear a size 15 shoe too. For those of you who don't know me I'm about 6'5" and Mom just wanted something I could cuddle up in while watching TV and not have my feet hanging out. I think she succeeded. My purple couch is under there somewhere. Mom passed when I was 21 and everything she made I hold dearly and even more so since I started knitting. You gotta love the 1970's colors. I think you could probably see this on Google Earth if it were outside. Thanks Mom! :)

Do you have something that you were gifted by someone very special that you will keep forever?

"Its so wonderful to have a handmade item from someone who loves you. The happy memories it brings back and the feeling of being connected and cared for is represented in every stitch. Somewhere, there is a picture of me taken in the mid 70's wearing a wool plaid skirt, a white turtleneck and a bright yellow crocheted vest. Freaky now, I know. But then it was the height of fashion. And my Mom made the entire outfit! I wish I still had that outfit, but even though its long gone, the memories remain. I loved that outfit. It made me feel like Marcia Brady!"

I will add my vote to that - a hand made item from a loved one is so precious. When I make something for someone, I think about them while I am making it and I put my love for them in it. It feels really great when someone understands that and recieves it well. I have a pieced quilt that grandma made me, and I now have her sewing machine. It is special to me.

You crack me up..."I think you could probably see this on Google Earth if it were outside."

  4. The colours are great :) God bless acrylic, it will outlive us all.

I don't think I'd have had the patience to make something that big, if you were my son I would've told you to wear long socks and be grateful for the small afghan :P

  5. My Mom made me an Irish Knit poncho when I was in 10th grade (37 years ago). I still have it. Still wear it. It was made in an acrylic so it is machine washable and still looks good. Incredible.

My Mom also made each of us quilts, hand sewn beautiful things. She also made them for many of her grandchildren. At her funeral we had five quilt hangers to display her work.

  6. oh, i love that afghan!! i have an afghan that my great-grandmother made for our family, it is crocheted but in dire need of repair. i also have tatted lace that her sister made at around the 1900's. it was on many a blouse, but most recently on a red velvet party dress that my great-grandma made for me when I was about 7 or 8. I also have a HUGE crocheted bedspread (of the bobble hexagon variety) that my great-grandma's sister made. I wish I had known her, but I am grateful that my great-grandma was with me until I was well into my 30's. She was of hearty stock, and so crafy, my Nana!! Thank you for the memories!
